Homemade hair masks and oil treatments have been a staple in my life since my toddler days thanks to my mom, a woman who grew back her hair using her own natural remedies after doctors provided her with no solutions for her hair loss.
Wash days usually meant treatment days as a kid and I have done my best to continue the tradition my mom began. Below is a recipe for my go to hair mask. I try to do this once a month or whenever I feel like my hair needs an extra umph. Feel free to modify it to your liking. You can add additional oils or replace any of the ingredients. Also, my measurements may leave you with too much or too little depending on how much hair you have so be mindful that you may need to make some adjustments.
For this mask you will need:
1. 1 Egg
2. 1/2 of an Avocado
3. 1-2 tablespoons of Mayonnaise (the cheaper the brand the better. Cheaper brands tend to have higher amounts of cholesterol which is good for your hair.)
4. X amount of your preferred oil(s), I recommend Olive Oil
5. A Plastic Bag
6. A Bowl
Combine the ingredients the mixing bowl until the mixture is smooth. Some people only use the egg yolk, I’ve always used the whole egg, do whichever you prefer. Once the ingredients have been combined, section your hair and apply the mixture section by section starting with the back of your head, until your hair is evenly saturated. You can just tie up your hair but I like to place a plastic bag over my head, and apply heat of some sort to help open the hair cuticles and allow the nutrients to be absorbed.
I call this a quick repair mask because the fats, protein, and cholesterol in the ingredients help to strengthen the hair while combatting frizz and it leaves your hair looking shiny and feeling super soft to the touch. This mask is perfect for people with “coarse” or dry hair. People with thin hair or particularly oily hair might want to stay away because this is super moisturizing and it may weigh your hair down. If you still choose to try it, be sure to rinse with Apple Cider Vinegar or shampoo really well afterwards to prevent any unwanted build up.
